Mati Erelt, Helle Metslang, Grammar and Pragmatics: Changes in the Paradigm of the Estonian Imperative
Abstract. The singular and plural 2nd person forms are central and stable in the paradigm of the Estonian imperative. The other forms are characterized by variation in use and forms, which points to certain function shifts. The shifts are caused by pragmatic and semantic factors; they have an important role in the situation structure and communicative function. The indicative form is mostly used instead of the 1st person plural imperative. Both forms, however, have their own usage area and nuances. The ku-/gu- marked the original optative form and the permissive construction with the particle las show similar developments into: 1) the third person imperative form, 2) evidential imperative, and 3) concessive. The grammaticalization of the shifts under discussion is still underway — the indicative form acting as the imperative form has not acquired the object government as yet, and the source meaning of the las-construction is still affecting its behaviour ruling out the use of the 2nd person forms.

Zusammenfassung. Die Pflanzenbenennungen mit einer zoonymischen Komponente, die fast in allen Gebieten der phytonymischen Lexik anzutreffen sind, bilden ein besonderes Mikrosystem. Die Tierbenennungen werden als Phytonyme entweder selbständig oder als Bestandteil einer lexikalischen Einheit in Verbindung mit anderen Komponenten gebraucht. Die Benennungen, die spezifische strukturelle Besonderheiten und einen spezifischen Inhalt haben, stellen nicht nur unmittelbare Beziehungen zwischen der Tier- und Pflanzenwelt dar, sondern sie erfüllen auch andere Funktionen.

Jevgenij C y p a n o v, Die Übersetzung von russischsprachigen temporalen Nebensätzen des Matthäus-Evangeliums in die Komi-Sprache
Zusammenfassung. Analysiert wird die Art und Weise der Übertragung von russischsprachigen temporalen Nebensätzen des Matthäus-Evangeliums in die Komi-Sprache. Die hier untersuchten Übersetzungen hat es von 1823 bis in die Gegenwart gegeben. Der Autor gelangt zu der Schlussfolgerung, dass in jüngeren Übersetzungen eine Tendenz der Veränderung der Syntax des übersetzten Textes in die Richtung, dass genuine Möglichkeiten der Komi-Sprache, bishin zu Mitteln ihrer Folklore zum Einsatz kommen, zu beobachten ist.

Anna Widmer, Reconnecting and Reconsidering. Remarks on the Final Discussion of the International Linguistic Symposium "Reconnecting Finnic", Hold in Helsinki, 14.—16. 11. 2002
Abstract. In the final discussion of the symposium "Reconnecting Finnic" on attempt was made to probe into the question of why the fields of general linguistics on the one hand and Finnic/Uralic studies on the other take so little note of one another or build so little on the research of the other discipline. A number of problems were mentioned in the discussion, for example the academic education of Uralists, the use of generic transcription systems, the use of languages other than English in Uralist publications or the inability of Uralists to describe adequately syntactic problems of the so-called smaller languages. In this contribution I will try to examine these arguments with respect to their plausibility and look for other problems which inhibit the dialogue between general/theoretical linguistics and any particular linguistic field as, for example, Uralic studies. I consider it a significant point that the number of publications has reached a level that makes their recognition virtually impossible.
